The first project in Architectual Design II with Maggie Kerkmans tasked students with studying a precedent building from Latin America.  The Biblioteca de España in Medellín, Columbia was designed by Giancarlo Mazzanti in 2005.  The 11,500-square-foot, 5 story library is divided among the three masses: auditorium, library with internet access, and a community center. The shapes of the masses were inspired by the mountainous terrain and were designed to integrate into the landscape.
The library's relationship between interior and exterior space was fairly straightforward.  It uses a system of modular, stacked floors in the interior with a sperate exterior shell.  For a 'fragment study' I choose to force the interior and exterior spaces to clash into one another.
